There are plenty of cop novels, many of them first-rate and written by undisputed masters of the genre, but Schwegel has a contemporary voice that is utterly unique. Her prose delivers a gut punch weighted with empathy, a visceral kick to the heart that makes you actually care about the characters in a way that is extremely rare.
